Club Learning Centers

Yellow Room focuses on phonic awareness, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. While in the yellow room, kids are broken into groups and helped by adult staff to reach their literacy goals. Volunteers and our education partner Zuni Learning Tree are vital to the success of our after-school education. Zuni recently partnered with BookSmart which is a free reading program where Club members have access to ebooks through their Zuni log-ins.

November is a short school month but is also packed full of opportunities for the kids to learn about thankfulness and gratitude. Members are writing journals on topics around Veterans Day and Thanksgiving.

The Yellow Room is led by staff members, Raven Guess and Meg Mitchell.

Green Room focuses on math. We realize the importance of reading basics to the success in math. That is why we use word problems to make sure they meet their grade standard. Club kids work with word problems and breaking down what certain words mean and how they pertain to math.

During November, kids will working with money, identifying coins and their worth, adding and subtracting amounts. First graders are practicing reading strategies to solve addition and subtraction word problems. Second graders are learning to identify coin quantities and using addition and subtraction to make correct change. The third & fourth graders are practicing perimeter and area word problems.

The Green Room is led by staff members, Shailee Poole and Ashley Jones.

Reaching Goals

"CL" has been a Club member since first grade and is now in third grade. Over this time, CL has been an emerging reader with some struggles in both reading and math. At the end of our summer program and starting off this new school year, CL was reading an average of a little over 30 words a minute. To put that in perspective, a third grader should be able to read at a minimum of 71 words per minute fluently in the fall. CL has worked hard, I'm sure at school, but also at the Club to improve, and on the last reading test given by our learning center teachers, CL read 85 words within a minute. These are the wins we like to celebrate and everyday, CL is getting closer to becoming a fluent reader. With his recent reading test score, he has moved from the red station to the green station in the literacy room and he continues to work hard to bring up his math skills. Some times a child can be so hard on themselves when they struggle to keep up with their peers but we are so proud of CL and he is proud of his achievement.
